NEED withdraws from the Holy Alliance, declaring it “unholy”

“The alliance is no longer holy; it is unholy,” he declared.

Kampala: The National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED), under the leadership of President Joseph Kiiza Kabuleta, has formally withdrawn from the Holy Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties formed earlier this year to advocate for democratic governance and prepare Uganda for a post-Museveni leadership.

The Holy Alliance, launched on February 27, 2024, included NEED, JEEMA, SDP, CP, and the DP Block. It was envisioned as a collective effort to promote peaceful political transition and national unity.

However, Kabuleta, a founding member, declared the alliance defunct, citing several concerns that led to NEED’s exit.

Kabuleta revealed that decisions and actions were being made without input from all members, with even senior leaders like CP President Hon. Ken Lukyamuzi unaware of alliance activities.

“I started reading about the activities of the so-called alliance in newspapers, without any consultation,” Kabuleta stated.

The alliance’s original purpose of fostering national unity and leadership transformation has, according to Kabuleta, devolved into a partisan agenda dominated by the DP Block.

“The alliance is no longer holy; it is unholy,” he declared, criticizing the exclusion of NEED and other key members from recent alliance events.

Kabuleta also distanced NEED from suggestions attributed to the alliance about postponing elections and extending Museveni’s rule by three years. He strongly rejected such proposals as undemocratic.

“Forty years of his rule are already too much,” he emphasized.

Allegations of undisclosed and potentially regime-linked funding further deepened mistrust within the alliance. Kabuleta accused DP Block members of dodging questions about the origin of funds.

“This lack of transparency is unacceptable. NEED cannot be sold in such a bundle,” he said. Kabuleta accused the DP Block of prioritizing personal and parliamentary ambitions over the alliance’s collective goals.

“Our mission was to unite for national leadership and transformation, not personal gains,” he remarked.

NEED has pledged to continue its work independently, prioritizing integrity and its vision for Uganda’s democratic transformation.

“We will not be part of any alliance that compromises integrity, transparency, and the preparation of true leadership for Uganda’s future,” Kabuleta reaffirmed.
