Umukuka III urges Bakiga to embrace circumcision
He was supported in this sentiment by local leaders.
Kabale: His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, the Umukuka III of the Bamasaba people, has concluded his official tour of the Kigezi region, where he emphasized the importance of circumcision among the Bakiga people for both cultural and health reasons, writes Steven Masiga.
This call aligns with historical narratives suggesting that the Bakiga are descendants of the Bamasaba who fled Bugisu due to fears surrounding the circumcision tradition, as evidenced by shared names and cultural practices.
The Umukuka’s visit was made possible by the invitation from the Mutebile family and the clergy of Kabale Catholic Church. He was accompanied by prominent figures from the Inzuymasaba cultural institution, including finance minister Hon. Andrew Masaba and special envoy Hon. Wadada, among others.
During his visit, the Umukuka participated in a fundraising event that raised over 20 million shillings for the completion of Rushoroza Catholic Church, a project initiated by the late Professor Emmanuel Mutebile, former Governor of the Bank of Uganda.
Highlighting the deep cultural ties between the Bakiga and Bamasaba, the Umukuka pointed out similarities in place names, such as Bushika and Bukigai, which are found in both Kigezi and Bududa districts.
He was supported in this sentiment by local leaders, including Police Commissioner Dr. Rubanza and Regional Police Commander Mr. Otim Bosco, who noted the shared customs and practices of the two communities.
The Mutebile family and church leaders warmly welcomed the Umukuka to Kabale. In his remarks, he encouraged cultural institutions across Uganda to collaborate with the government to achieve developmental goals. He also invited the Bakiga to visit Masabaland, underscoring the importance of intermarriage to strengthen cultural ties.
The visit concluded with a celebratory gathering at Lake Bunyonyi, reflecting the unity and shared heritage of the Bamasaba and Bakiga people.
