Two detained for possession of wildlife species

A case has been registered against them for possession of a protected wildlife species.

Amuru: Two key suspects are currently in custody at Elegu Border Police Station in Amuru District for allegedly possessing a protected wildlife species, specifically a pangolin.

The suspects have been identified as Akur Moses, a 19-year-old student and South Sudanese national residing in Nimule, South Sudan, and Alana Denis Patrick Oweka, a 21-year-old boda boda rider from the same area.

According to ASP Ongom David Mudong, the Aswa West Police Spokesperson, on September 23, 2024, the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations (OC CID) at Elegu Border Police Station received intelligence via a phone call about two individuals who were in possession of a pangolin and intending to sell it at Lubii Garden, Elegu Town Council.

He added that a team of police detectives was dispatched to the scene and apprehended the suspects, seizing a live pangolin as evidence. A case has been registered against them for possession of a protected wildlife species.

ASP Ongom Mudong stated that statements have been obtained from relevant sources, and the live pangolin has been secured at the police station. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has been notified to retrieve the suspects along with the exhibit as inquiries continue.
