NGOs to complement the construction of Nakwanya Childcare School

IGF's Childcare International School currently has a population of 916 pupils, while Childcare Amida Primary School has 918 pupils enrolled.

Kitgum: The Irene Gleeson Foundation (IGF), in partnership with Feed the Hungry and Feed My Starving Children, is set to support the construction of school structures at Nakwanya Childcare Community School in Akurumo Parish, Orom East Subcounty, Kitgum district.

This announcement was made by IGF Executive Director John Paul Kiffasi during the groundbreaking ceremony held on Tuesday, June 11th, 2024, at the school site.

According to Kiffasi, IGF Nakwanya Childcare Community School currently hosts disadvantaged children who cannot afford to attend school since the nearest schools are over 10 km away.

He appealed to donors for support in the construction of classrooms and a health center, emphasizing that this community-owned school aims to complement the efforts of the government.

Kiffasi noted that a number of young girls and boys who dropped out of school are undergoing vocational training in fashion and garment cutting, carpentry, and joinery, respectively. He pledged to donate tools upon their completion of the three-month non-formal training program.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Oryem Henry Okello, highlighted the challenges Nakwanya faces in education, water, and health services, given its location on the border between Kitgum and Karenga. He emphasized the importance of education as the pillar of life, requiring dedication from both children and parents.

Minister Oryem pledged to include Nakwanya Childcare Community School in the list of schools to be considered for government grant aid, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on the Irene Gleeson Foundation.

Learners’ enrolment

Irene Gleeson Foundation (IGF) schools have registered more girls than boys in their five pre-primary and primary schools in Kitgum and Lamwo districts.

This revelation was made by IGF Executive Director, John Paul Kiffasi, while addressing partners from Feed My Starving Children and Feed the Hungry on Monday, June 10th, 2024, at Christian Community Church, Lulojo, in the Central division of Kitgum Municipality.

According to Kiffasi, statistics indicate that 60% of girls drop out of school in the Acholi Subregion; however, IGF schools have demonstrated a higher enrollment of girls compared to boys. This trend is evident in the IGF schools of Childcare International, Childcare Amida, Childcare Palabek, Childcare Padibe, and Childcare Nakwanya.

John Paul Kiffasi extends his appreciation to Feed My Starving Children and Feed the Hungry for their continuous support, which includes providing MannaPack meals and other resources, positively impacting the lives of the children.

He also praised the exceptional performance of pupils in co-curricular activities such as music, dance, drama, athletics, and football. Kiffasi further announced that the Irene Gleeson Foundation will organize an inter-school competition among the five IGF schools.

IGF’s Childcare International School currently has a population of 916 pupils, while Childcare Amida Primary School has 918 pupils enrolled.
