NUP speaks out on demonstration against Speaker Among

Arua: The National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership in Arua has distanced itself from the rumors of demonstrations against the speaker of parliament in Arua.
There was information circulating that the leadership national unity platform in Arua, together with former Rubaga division RCC Anderson Burora, are organizing demonstrations in Arua.
Asega Habibu Jogo, the deputy secretary for mobilization in northern Uganda wonders why they would demonstrate in Arua City yet the speaker seats in Kampala, and what could be the reason for them coming to demonstrate in Arua?
He further says that as the National Unity Platform, they are busy with their internal registration of the members and have no connection with Anderson Burora, who is an NRM cadre, yet the National Unity Platform is an independent party.
He says if, as a national platform, they are to organize demonstrations, it would be on the high taxes and other social issues affecting the community members within West Nile.
Leti Yophas, the eyeing for the mayor central division, told this publication that the news of the demonstration came as a surprise to him.
He says he has never met with Burora and has not heard of anything in that line.
He says that as a national unity platform, they are busy with their own internal structuring and have no hand in NRM issues.
Matua Job Richard, the assistant RCC in Arua City, wonders why the demonstration against the speaker who seats in Kampala is done in Arua City.
Matua says that as the office of the RCC, they are ready to deal with anyone who will lead the demonstration in Arua.
He says if they want to stage the demonstration against the speaker, it should be in Kampala, where the office of parliament is located, not Arua City.
He says the current national program in Arua City is the ongoing population census, which doesn’t need sabotage from anybody.
On April 30, the UK government announced sanctions against Speaker Among and two former ministers for Karamoja affairs, Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, citing their involvement in corruption.
Under the UK’s global anti-corruption sanctions regime, Mary Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu will face travel bans and asset freezes.
The UK government stated that Kitutu and Nandutu embezzled thousands of iron sheets from a government-funded housing project designed to assist vulnerable communities in Karamoja.
Amongi was found to have benefited from the proceeds of the theft, according to London’s statement.
