Bunyoro endorses FDC Katonga’s plan to form new party
As they headed toward Kijura Trading Centre, police intervened by firing tear gas and rubber bullets to block the procession.
Masindi: The members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Bunyoro subregion attached to the Katonga faction have endorsed the formation of a new political party.
The FDC party is currently divided into two factions: Katonga Faction: led by former FDC President Dr. Kizza Besigye and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago; and the Najjanankumbi Faction: led by FDC President Patrick Amuriat Obboi and Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
The Katonga faction accuses the Najjanankumbi group of collaborating with the ruling NRM government.
Dr. Besigye has been vocal about not reconciling with the Najjanankumbi team and instead considering other options, including forming a new political party.
The FDC members in Bunyoro have endorsed the formation of a new political party aligned with the Katonga faction.
This decision was made during a consultation held on May 2, 2024, at Masindi Education Hall in Masindi Town.
The rationale behind this endorsement is that the Najjanankumbi-based faction has lost focus, and redirecting FDC within its current form is challenging.
Dr. Besigye emphasized that the new direction does not necessarily mean removing President Museveni from power through the ballot box in 2026.
Instead, he stressed the importance of building a strong foundation at the grassroots level to continue the struggle against the ruling party.
Besigye called for unity among party members despite political differences, with the goal of overthrowing the current government.
Asinasi Nyakato, the Hoima City Woman Member of Parliament, expressed support for the formation of the new party.
She cited her inability to dine with Amuriat and colleagues who are collaborating with the ruling government as a reason for endorsing the new party.
Rogers Kanti, a former Masindi Municipality MP contestant representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been actively involved in Ugandan politics.
Rogers Kanti, who contests the 2021 general election for the Masindi Municipality Parliamentary seat as an NUP candidate gained attention when he was arrested on allegations of burning President Museveni’s campaign posters hours before the election.
Kanti claimed that he found some of Mr. Museveni’s posters pinned on his car and others dropped inside without his consent, leading him to react by burning them.
Kanti expressed a clear stance against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
He emphasized that their goal is to overthrow the NRM government from power, viewing the NUP as colleagues in this endeavor rather than enemies.
The Member of Parliament representing Kiira Municipality, Ssemuju Nganda, asserted that his decision to leave the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party was driven by his refusal to associate with leaders who collaborate with the ruling government.
After meeting with other political leaders, including Dr. Kizza Besigye, Kanti participated in a procession in Masindi town.
As they headed toward Kijura Trading Centre, police intervened by firing tear gas and rubber bullets to block the procession.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the procession continued, culminating in a rally at Booma Grounds in Masindi Town.
