PLU 2031 Muhoozi endorsement drive reaches Kisoro as organisers report over 1,000 signatures

Kisoro: A political mobilisation exercise in support of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s proposed 2031 presidential candidature has reached Kisoro District, attracting hundreds of residents, political and security leaders, boda boda operators and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) supporters.

The exercise, held at the Mayor’s Garden in Kisoro Municipality, was organised by PLU as part of a wider nationwide campaign to collect signatures from supporters backing Gen. Muhoozi’s proposed candidature.

Organisers said more than 1,000 people appended their signatures on the first day of the exercise.

Among those who attended the signature-appending event were State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Hon. Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, Kisoro District LC5 Chairperson Hon. Nelson Shangabasheija, Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, councillors, PLU district and regional coordinators, and other local leaders.

Speaking at the event, Minister Ngabirano said the mobilisation reflected what she described as the will of the people participating in the process.

“This mobilisation reflects the will of the people who are participating in this process,” Ngabirano said.

She also highlighted youth participation in leadership and national affairs, saying initiatives of this nature could create opportunities for young people to engage in the country’s future leadership.

Hon. Nelson Shangabasheija, the PLU Kigezi Sub-region Coordinator and Patriot Officer Number 19, described Gen. Muhoozi as a potential leader, citing his current positions as Chief of Defence Forces and Presidential Advisor on Special Operations.

Using a bus analogy, Shangabasheija said national leadership requires what he described as a capable driver.

“A country is like a bus. You need a capable driver to take it to where it is supposed to go,” Shangabasheija told the gathering.

He said he would like to see Gen. Muhoozi take over the presidency when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni eventually leaves office and expressed his expectation that Gen. Muhoozi will appear on the ballot in 2031.

At the centre of the Kisoro mobilisation was Capt. Arthur Mugisha Rucakatsi, popularly known as Bubu, a PLU coordinator, patron of the Kisoro United Boda Boda Association and Vice President of Sports Club Volcanoes.

Addressing the gathering, Capt. Mugisha described Gen. Muhoozi as a “generational leader” and called on residents to participate in the PLU mobilisation exercise.

Helmet drive targets 8,000 boda boda riders

Following the endorsement exercise, Capt. Mugisha expanded his community activities with a safety initiative targeting boda boda operators across Kisoro District.

He announced plans to provide safety helmets to thousands of motorcycle riders, with the initiative targeting up to 8,000 boda boda operators across the district.

Rucakatsi said he intends to distribute helmets on a monthly basis, with the initiative aimed at encouraging riders to prioritise their safety, protect passengers and reduce risks associated with motorcycle transport.

He has already donated helmets to members of the Kisoro United Boda Boda Association and pledged to continue supporting the riders.

Robert Karangara, Chairman of the Kisoro United Boda Boda Association, commended Rucakatsi for what he described as his continued support for the welfare of motorcycle riders.

Karangara urged boda boda operators to remain united and disciplined, observe traffic regulations and make proper use of the helmets.

“We appreciate the continued support towards the welfare of our members. We also call upon riders to remain disciplined, observe traffic regulations and use the helmets properly,” Karangara said.

Support extended to student at Seseme Girls Secondary School

After the PLU mobilisation activities, Rucakatsi visited Seseme Girls Secondary School, where he pledged to pay full school fees and education-related costs up to Senior Six for Odeta Twizerimana, a Senior Three student living with a disability.

Twizerimana lost her father in May this year, leaving her mother, Uzamukunda Kellen, struggling to meet the family’s needs through farming.

According to the school’s headteacher, Peace Ruzaza, the family had previously experienced difficulties paying school fees on time and had on several occasions needed additional time to raise the required funds.

The intervention has given Twizerimana renewed hope as she continues with her education.

The student, who dreams of becoming a doctor, said she had prayed for assistance and promised to work hard at school to make use of the opportunity.

“I had prayed for someone to help me. I am grateful for the support and I promise to work hard at school so that I can achieve my dream of becoming a doctor,” Twizerimana said.

Her mother, Uzamukunda Kellen, welcomed the support, saying the death of her husband had placed additional financial pressure on the family and made it difficult to meet school fees and other household expenses.

The Kisoro activities form part of PLU’s broader mobilisation programme involving endorsement activities and the collection of physical signatures from supporters in different parts of Uganda in support of Gen. Muhoozi’s proposed 2031 presidential candidature.

The political mobilisation was accompanied by community initiatives, including the distribution of motorcycle helmets and education support for a vulnerable student, highlighting Rucakatsi’s parallel involvement in political mobilisation and community assistance in Kisoro.
