Museveni assures CAF Uganda will be ready for AFCON 2027

Kampala: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that Uganda will address outstanding requirements and be adequately prepared to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Kenya and Tanzania.
Museveni made the assurance on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, when he met CAF Acting Secretary General Samson Adamu, CAF Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui and a technical team at State House.
The CAF delegation briefed the President on its observations following inspections of stadiums, training facilities and other infrastructure required for the tournament.
Wambui commended Uganda’s progress, particularly in the development of stadiums and training grounds.
“I would like to commend the efforts that have been put in so far, especially in terms of the stadiums and training grounds. The progress is commendable,” Wambui said.
Museveni said the government would address the remaining challenges, citing Uganda’s experience hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in 2024.
“We hosted NAM here, which comprised 150 countries, and we were able to deal with them. The Kampala area has the facilities, but now the challenge is upcountry, which we are now going to concentrate on,” Museveni said.
He further assured the CAF delegation that government would take the necessary measures to meet the remaining requirements.
“I will unlock whatever needs to be unlocked, and I’m very sure the AFCON people will be very happy when they come here,” Museveni said.
CAF seeks single visa arrangement
The CAF Acting Secretary General also asked Uganda to fast-track the implementation of a single visa arrangement for Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to ease the movement of football fans, teams and tournament delegates during AFCON 2027.
The proposed arrangement would facilitate cross-border travel among the three host countries during the tournament.
Museveni said he would engage his counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania on the matter, noting that discussions had already started.
“I have got all my orders, and I’m going to implement them,” Museveni said.
CAF has previously identified cross-border coordination on visa, immigration, customs and mobility as part of the preparations for the three-country tournament.
Museveni meets National AFCON Task Force
In a related development, Museveni also met the National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, which briefed him on Uganda’s preparations for the tournament.
The task force updated the President on preparations being undertaken by government ministries, departments and agencies involved in hosting the continental competition.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, FUFA President Moses Magogo and other government officials.
AFCON 2027 will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027, marking the return of Africa’s premier men’s football tournament to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted it in 1976.
