Kakumiro: A 36-year-old man suspected of livestock theft has died after being severely beaten by an angry mob in Rutooma B Village, Rutooma Ward, Nkooko Sub-county, Kakumiro District.
The deceased has been identified as Deo Alinitwe, also known as Bushera, a businessman and resident of Mwitanzige Town. He was allegedly caught transporting goats suspected to have been stolen from Nkooko Town Council.
According to residents, Alinitwe was riding a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 229HP, when he was intercepted by locals who accused him of theft and attacked him. His body was later found dumped by the roadside at the junction of the Mwitanzige–Nkooko Town road. One goat was recovered during the incident.
Another suspect, identified only as Ronald, a resident of Ijumangabo Village in Mwitanzige Sub-county, survived the attack but was left in critical condition.
Residents of Nkooko and Mwitanzige sub-counties have raised concern over the rising cases of livestock theft in the area. They claim thieves are increasingly targeting livestock, agricultural produce, and household property. The residents have called upon security agencies to intensify night patrols to curb the growing crime.
The LC I Chairperson of Rutooma B Village, David Muhaga, urged youth to engage in productive activities and avoid criminal behavior, saying the incident should serve as a warning to those involved in theft.
However, Muhaga also cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, noting that mob justice often results in the death of innocent people.
Meanwhile, the LC III Chairperson of Nkooko Sub-county, Moses Musinguzi, advised residents to strengthen security around their domestic animals to deter thieves. He emphasized that protecting homes and property is a shared responsibility.
Musinguzi further urged security personnel to respond swiftly to theft-related cases to prevent the public from resorting to mob justice.
By press time, Kakumiro Police had visited the scene, and a postmortem examination had been conducted.
