Masindi: Police in the Albertine North region have arrested a total of 80 suspected criminals in an operation conducted over the weekend.
The development was confirmed by Solomon Mugisa, the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) for Albertine North region, during a Tuesday evening briefing at his office.
Mugisa revealed that out of the 80 suspects, 25 were on Tuesday presented before court after police recovered several exhibits linked to their cases. He noted that some suspects face charges including opium smoking, burglary, housebreaking, and shopbreaking, among others. Mugisa added that the suspects are expected to be remanded to Masindi Government Prison until the Christmas season is over.
He explained that the targeted areas in Masindi Municipality included Kijura North, Kijura Central, Kijura South, and Katama cells in the Central Division. The operation, he said, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful festive season.
The CLO further stated that police will continue similar operations in Kabarwana, Nyangahya, Kihande, Kinogozi, Kigulya, Karujubu, and Katagurukwa in Masindi District. Other targeted areas include Kigumba and Bweyale in Kiryandongo District, followed by Biiso and Wanseko in Buliisa District.
According to Mugisa, the overall goal is to ensure that communities in Albertine North enjoy a crime-free Christmas season.
As the operations continue, Mugisa appealed to residents to cooperate with security teams by helping to identify suspects and by appearing in court to testify, so that offenders can be successfully prosecuted and convicted.
