NUSDA women’s conference empowers Alur female students amid push for Greater Nebbi Unity

Kampala: Gathering celebrating women’s leadership and education, the Nebbi University Students’ Development Association (NUSDA) hosted the second edition of its Women’s Conference on Saturday, November 8, at Kyambogo University’s CTF Building.
Held under the theme “She Rises, She Leads, She Inspires,” the conference brought together female representatives from Alur student associations across universities and tertiary institutions in Uganda to discuss empowerment, mentorship, and holistic development.
Founded to unite Alur students in higher education, NUSDA serves as an umbrella body promoting academic excellence, cultural preservation, and community transformation among natives of the Greater Nebbi sub-region, which includes Nebbi, Zombo, and Pakwach districts.
Member associations include: NEMSA (Makerere University), ALGUSA (Gulu University), AKUSA (Kyambogo University), AMIUSA (Metropolitan International University), NEPASA (UCC Pakwach), MUASC (Muni University), BUASA (Busitema University), NEMUBBSA (MUBS), AISA (ISBAT), ALSA (KIU Ishaka), MHASA (Mengo Hospital), ALKIUSDA (KIU Kampala), NUCUSA (UCU), and ANUSA (Nkumba University).
The association traces its origins to the vision of former District Education Officer Mr. Kura Vasco and other stakeholders, who sought to create a unified platform for Alur students to promote unity, leadership, and service through community outreach and school engagement programs.
Following the success of the inaugural Women’s Conference in 2024, this year’s event strengthened the focus on gender equity and socio-economic empowerment, aligning with Ker Alur’s (Alur Kingdom’s) broader campaigns against gender-based violence, child marriage, and health-related stigma.
Partnering with Youth Zenith Uganda, a youth-led advocacy and skills empowerment group, NUSDA and the Alur Kingdom emphasized intergenerational collaboration in addressing community challenges.
The one-day conference featured keynote addresses, interactive panels, and experience-sharing sessions centered on the challenges and opportunities facing young women.
Notable speakers included Mr. Edison Okumu, Dr. Hassan Okecha, and Mrs. Monicah Oyeki, whose presentations inspired participants with stories of resilience and leadership.
Panel discussions engaged both students and experts from NUSDA and Youth Zenith Uganda, exploring four central themes: Women Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Skills – Building economic independence through enterprise and innovation, Financial Literacy – Equipping young women with budgeting and investment knowledge in low-resource settings, Balancing Relationships, Academics, and Career – Navigating personal development alongside professional aspirations and Sexual and Reproductive Health – Promoting rights awareness and reducing stigma, in line with Ker Alur’s anti-GBV campaigns.
Participants described the event as “a catalyst for change,” with one attendee saying, “This isn’t just talk — it’s the spark we need to lead our communities forward.”
Speaking at the conference, Ms. Okwaimungu Precious Fancy, NUSDA’s Secretary for Women’s Affairs, lauded the collaborative spirit between stakeholders and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to empowering the youth of Greater Nebbi.
“We continue to work hand in hand with our stakeholders and all natives of Greater Nebbi for the greater good,”
Ms. Okwaimungu said, highlighting plans to expand outreach programs targeting youth unemployment and health inequality in the region.
The conference concluded with renewed calls for unity among Alur students and the broader Nebbi community, emphasizing education, empowerment, and collaboration as key drivers of transformation.
