Drama as parents clash over burial of their child in Masindi
The body, which had spent the night at Caroline’s home where a grave had already been dug, became the center of the standoff.
Masindi: The burial of a 14-year-old girl was delayed in Pakanyi Sub- County, Masindi District, after her parents clashed over who had the right to bury her remains.
The incident occurred in Kiruuli Village following the death of the girl, only identified as Lillian, who passed away on Tuesday. A dispute erupted between her mother, Caroline of Kiruuli Village, and her father, Ausi Kiiza of Katumba Village.
According to residents, Lillian had lived with her mother at her maternal grandparents’ home since childhood. After her death, Caroline collected her body from the hospital and took it home for burial. However, Kiiza, who was reportedly absent from his daughter’s life showed up demanding to bury her at his home instead.
The disagreement quickly escalated, with relatives from both sides joining in the confrontation. The body, which had spent the night at Caroline’s home where a grave had already been dug, became the center of the standoff.
Caroline’s family reportedly demanded UGX 5 million in compensation and reimbursement of hospital expenses before releasing the body. Kiiza declined to pay, prompting further tension.
ASP Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Region Community Liaison Officer, told ugreports.co.ug on Thursday, October 30, 2025 that police intervened and mediated between the two families. The meeting resolved that Lillian be buried at her mother’s home in Kiruuli.
Mugisa noted that by the time an agreement was reached, it was already late in the evening, forcing relatives to postpone the burial to Thursday, October 30, 2025.
He condemned the incident, warning the public against actions that disturb the peace of the deceased. “We appeal to the public to avoid disturbing the peace of the deceased and to always explore amicable and peaceful means of settling disagreements by seeking the intervention of leaders,” Mugisa advised.
