Masindi road rehabilitated after ten years of neglect

He noted that the works aim to ensure durability and all-season accessibility.

Masindi: After nearly a decade of disrepair, authorities in Masindi District have launched the rehabilitation of the 17.3-kilometer Buliima–Byebega road in Bwijanga Sub-county.

The project, estimated at UGX 360 million, is expected to significantly improve transportation and economic activity in the area.

The road works were officially launched on Thursday at Kyamarolere Trading Centre in Kitamba Parish, where local leaders and residents gathered to witness the long-awaited milestone.

Pascal Isingoma Agaba, LC1 Chairperson of Kyamarolere Village, welcomed the rehabilitation effort, noting that the road had been in a poor state for nearly ten years.

“We have been struggling to transport our agricultural products to the market. We’re also appealing to the government to extend electricity to our area because many of our machines remain unused due to the lack of power,” he said.

Agaba also expressed concerns about nighttime insecurity, with residents frequently targeted by robbers.

James Mudede, LC3 Chairperson for Bwijanga Sub-county, praised the district leadership for taking action, saying the improved road will ease access to markets and enhance local livelihoods.

According to Joseph Sunday, the Masindi District Roads Engineer, the Shs360 million project will cover rehabilitation of 17.3 kilometers, installation of 107 culverts and application of marram on 5 kilometers of the road.

He noted that the works aim to ensure durability and all-season accessibility.

Speaking at the launch, Cosmas Byaruhanga, the Masindi District Chairperson, explained that maintaining such a vast road network is a challenge given the limited funding from the central government.

“We urge Members of Parliament to advocate for increased road funding, especially for large districts like Masindi that have extensive road networks to manage,” Byaruhanga said.

Musa Kyamiza, the Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer (PACAO), advised locals to use the new road to access markets and improve their incomes. He also cautioned against speeding, encouraging responsible road usage.

At the same event, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darious Nandinda emphasized the importance of using the road to transport produce, thereby increasing household incomes.

“I encourage all residents to take advantage of government programs such as Emyooga, Parish Development Model (PDM), and Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) to fight poverty and create sustainable livelihoods,” Nandinda stated.

Nandinda also responded to security concerns raised by residents during the launch, promising that their fears would be addressed. He urged the Supervisor of Works to ensure the construction meets the required quality standards.
