UG Decides 2026

NUP’s Kiweesi fails to secure nomination for Masindi District chairperson seat

The nomination exercise continues on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will conclude this Friday.

Masindi: The Electoral Commission on Wednesday declined to nominate Tom Kiweesi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for the Masindi District chairperson seat, due to irregularities in his endorsement signatures.

According to Abubakr Lubwama, the Assistant Returning Officer for Masindi District, Kiweesi failed to meet the nomination requirements after it was discovered that some of the individuals who had endorsed his candidacy were not registered voters.

He was advised to return with valid signatures before the nomination deadline.

Speaking to this publication, Kiweesi admitted the oversight and promised to correct the mistake before the end of the nomination period on Friday.

He remained confident in his bid, stating he is still the right candidate for the position despite the setback.

Lubwama noted that the nomination exercise, which began Wednesday as part of preparations for the 2026 general elections, has so far gone on smoothly without major challenges.

By press time, two candidates had been successfully nominated, including William Mwambu, who is seeking re-election as the district councilor representing male persons with disabilities.

The nomination exercise continues on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will conclude this Friday.

Other candidates speak out

Goodman B. Faruk, who was officially nominated to contest as district male councilor for Central Division on the NRM ticket, expressed his gratitude to party members for their support.

Faruk pledged to deliver improved services to the people of Central Division, vowing to represent all categories of citizens including youth, the elderly, and women by ensuring they benefit from government programs.

Meanwhile, William Mwambu expressed confidence in retaining his seat. He revealed plans to submit his campaign schedule and begin voter outreach.

Mwambu was nominated unopposed and said the endorsement from his party gives him confidence in the upcoming elections.

Christopher Acidri, aspiring district councilor representing Nyantonzi Sub-county, also expressed optimism after his nomination. He said he is now focusing on drafting a campaign strategy to reach out to the electorate.

RDC issues caution

Masindi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darius Nandinda has warned candidates against organizing processions in busy areas, which could disrupt local businesses.

He urged all aspirants to adhere strictly to the Electoral Commission’s guidelines to avoid conflicts with the law during the campaign season.
