Youth MP Aspirant Kanyesigye clears air on rival’s disqualification

She emphasized that the disqualification was purely based on legal requirements and not influenced by any personal petition from her camp.

Kampala: National Female Youth MP aspirant Mercy Kanyesigye has this afternoon addressed widespread allegations on social media claiming she was behind the petition that led to the disqualification of her closest rival, Phiona Nakku.

Nakku was removed from the race by the Electoral Commission on grounds of being over the age limit required for youth leadership positions.

Speaking to youth chairpersons and her two national coordinators during a meeting at Grand Global Hotel in Nakulabye, Kampala, Kanyesigye dismissed the claims as malicious propaganda intended to tarnish her image.

“People are spreading propaganda that I removed Nakku. I am not her mother who gave birth to her at that age,” Kanyesigye said. “My supporters, let’s remain firm and focused on winning the mantle.”

She emphasized that the disqualification was purely based on legal requirements and not influenced by any personal petition from her camp.

Kanyesigye also reiterated her manifesto’s focus on youth empowerment, highlighting programs aimed at skilling, employment opportunities, and digital engagement in line with government initiatives.

“My campaign at the district level has always focused on uplifting the youth through empowerment and working closely with government programs, both on-ground and online,” she noted.

Benjamin Kiriza, the Western Sub-region coordinator, reaffirmed the team’s commitment to Kanyesigye’s success. “There’s no more time to waste the point is, Kanyesigye must win the mantle,” he declared.

Despite the postponement of the youth elections to a yet-to-be-announced date, enthusiasm among the youth remains high. This follows the recently concluded delegate conference, during which President Yoweri Museveni instructed the NRM party secretariat to finalize the election schedule.

In a new twist, former candidate Phiona Nakku now disqualified has reportedly formed an alliance with fellow aspirant Diana Ampaire Kampe. This strategic move leaves the race primarily between Kanyesigye and Ampaire, setting the stage for a competitive showdown once elections are rescheduled.
