Kiryandongo constructs modern classrooms to curb school dropout

We are grateful to the District leadership for prioritizing this school.

Kiryandongo: In a bold move to tackle school dropout rates, especially among girls, Mboira Seed Secondary School has received a major infrastructural boost comprising five modern classrooms, a five-stance latrine, and 100 desks.

The development, which cost 466 million shillings, was funded and executed by the Kiryandongo District Local Government. The initiative is aimed at improving the learning environment and increasing student enrolment in Mboira Sub County, an area grappling with the highest school dropout rates in the district.

According to Richard Katwesige, the head teacher of Mboira Seed Secondary School, the new infrastructure has significantly transformed the school’s image. He noted that the improvements are already creating interest among learners from within the community and neighboring Masindi District.

“We currently have 453 students, including 160 girls, and we expect that number to rise. We are grateful to the District leadership for prioritizing this school,” said Katwesige.

He further appealed to the district to consider constructing a science and ICT laboratory, as well as a library, to position Mboira as a competitive secondary school both locally and nationally.

Johnson Katusabe, the District Inspector of Schools, praised the district’s community mobilization efforts, which he said have already led to an increase in girls’ enrolment.

Anselm Kyaligonza, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kiryandongo, acknowledged the role of parents in supporting school programs, adding that their participation is key to appreciating government efforts. He emphasized that the infrastructure development is in line with the NRM manifesto, which prioritizes education and youth empowerment.

“My first visit to Mboira Seed Secondary School inspired me to push for funding to improve its infrastructure. With this facelift, we expect better academic performance from learners,” Kyaligonza said.

He also encouraged parents to support the school feeding program to ensure that children have lunch and remain attentive during lessons.

David Mugenyi Ssemuddu, the Secretary for Finance, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting communities through initiatives like Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM). He urged parents to support their children’s education as a long-term investment.

On his part, Jonathan Akweteireho, the Deputy RDC, appealed to students to stay in school and focus on their studies. He warned parents against keeping children out of school, calling it a form of insecurity for the nation.

Mboira Sub County has been struggling with high teenage pregnancy rates and low primary school completion, especially among girls.

However, through ongoing community dialogues and the recent investment in school infrastructure, positive change is being recorded, as reflected in the rising number of girls enrolled at the school.
