TotalEnergies awards nursing scholarships to 15 Masindi students

“We couldn’t afford to pay tuition. Now we are confident our children will complete their education,” they shared.

Masindi: TotalEnergies EP Uganda has awarded full scholarships to 15 students from Masindi District to pursue nursing and midwifery studies at the Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery, where they are expected to report on Monday, July 21, 2025.

The scholarships are part of a broader initiative by TotalEnergies to commemorate its 100 years of global existence, with 100 students from six oil-affected districts within the Albertine Graben region namely Hoima, Kikuube, Pakwach, Masindi, Buliisa, and Nwoya, benefiting from the program.

Speaking at the award ceremony held at the Masindi Education Boardroom on Monday July 14, 2025, Martin Opio, the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at TotalEnergies EP Uganda, explained that the scholarships aim to support communities affected by oil and gas activities.

“The top 15 performers were selected from Hoima, Kikuube, Pakwach, and Masindi. Due to higher impact and proximity to the oil and gas projects, Buliisa and Nwoya had a higher allocation of 20 students each,” said Opio.

He emphasized that the two and half year scholarships cover tuition and related academic costs. However, he cautioned students that the funding would be terminated in cases of indiscipline, poor academic performance, or suspension.

Opio also urged the students to aim higher than just job-seeking after graduation. “We have had scholars come back asking for jobs. Our responsibility is to offer scholarships not employment. We encourage you to be job creators. Some of our past scholars have even started their own businesses,” he added.

Monica Kiiza, the Masindi District Education Officer (DEO), said that out of 133 applications, only 15 students were selected after a strict vetting process by TotalEnergies.

“Parents must support their children during holidays and meet other basic needs. TotalEnergies has done its part. Let us also play ours,” she appealed.

Samson Natsambwa, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, urged the beneficiaries to remain committed to their education and adhere to school rules.

Joshua Akugizibwe, a beneficiary from Katama Cell, Central Division, expressed excitement and appreciation. “My parents couldn’t afford tuition, and I’ve always dreamed of becoming a nurse. This scholarship has brought that dream closer to reality.”

Sharon Kuteesa, another recipient from Kihande II Cell, said she is determined to succeed. “This scholarship is a blessing. I promise to focus on my studies and make my dream of becoming a nurse come true.”

Rosemary Tekereza Caroline and Sarah Asiimwe, single mothers thanked TotalEnergies for relieving their financial burden. “We couldn’t afford to pay tuition. Now we are confident our children will complete their education,” they shared.
