Bishop Kasangaki calls for peaceful elections

“Most political leaders don’t want to leave office. The bishop has shown a powerful example of graceful leadership,” Kyomuhendo said.

Masindi: As Uganda heads into the peak of election campaigns, the outgoing Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. George William Kasangaki, has called for peaceful and respectful political engagement.

During his farewell service held on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Masindi town, Bishop Kasangaki condemned acts of violence that have marred the ongoing NRM party primaries across the country.

He urged politicians to avoid inciting hatred and instead campaign peacefully. He also encouraged those who may not win to graciously accept the outcomes.

“The country needs love, peace, unity, and happiness. These are the fruits we must strive to sow,” Kasangaki told a congregation of hundreds of believers.

The bishop was concluding his farewell tour of the Masindi-Kitara Diocese, which covers the districts of Buliisa, Kiryandongo, and Masindi, in preparation for his official retirement.

His handover is scheduled for August 3, 2025, when the bishop-elect will also be consecrated.

Drawing his farewell message from Philippians 4:9, Bishop Kasangaki also confirmed 53 young Christians into the Anglican faith during the service.

Masindi Municipality Mayor Ronald Busiinge Kyomuhendo praised the bishop’s humility and service, calling on political leaders to emulate his willingness to retire honorably.

“Most political leaders don’t want to leave office. The bishop has shown a powerful example of graceful leadership,” Kyomuhendo said.

Succession process

The process to select a new bishop for Masindi-Kitara Diocese started in October 2024 when Bishop Kasangaki announced his retirement plans for August 2025, as he reaches the mandatory retirement age.

A 15-member nomination committee, chaired by Diocesan Chancellor George Kunihira, was responsible for vetting candidates. After a thorough evaluation, Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza emerged as the chosen candidate.
