Mbale: Bukasakya Health Centre IV, located in the Industrial City Division, just a few meters away from the Chinese Industrial Park in Mbale City, has received a major boost in its quest to improve healthcare services.
Mr. Hefin Rees, a UK philanthropist, and his wife, Dr. Betham Rees, have committed to mobilizing their European network to raise the necessary funds for a state-of-the-art theatre machine, estimated at roughly 300 million Ugandan shillings.
The couple’s efforts are part of an initiative to ensure that Bukasakya Health Centre IV receives the much-needed equipment before the end of the year.
The facility, under joint management by the Government of Uganda and Spotlight Africa, aims to improve maternal and general healthcare services for the local population, particularly in facilitating safe deliveries and surgical procedures.
The UK delegation, which visited the health facility on Tuesday, included Mr. Hefin Rees, Dr. Betham Rees, Laura Bailey, and Wendy Hawson, among others.
Mr. Rees, a top UK lawyer and established arbitrator, along with his wife Dr. Betham, a family doctor, expressed their commitment to improving healthcare access in Uganda.
The Director of Spotlight Africa, Richard Okotel, warmly received the delegation in Uganda. Okotel reports to the UK-based team, headed by Mr. Rees, and together they aim to raise the necessary funds for this vital medical equipment.
Mr. Steven Masiga, Chairman of the Health Management Committee (HUMIC), expressed gratitude to the visitors for prioritizing the health of the Bamasaaba people and other residents of Mbale City.
He also thanked the Government of Uganda for its ongoing support in recruiting and paying staff, as well as providing medication for the health center.
Masiga emphasized that acquiring the theatre machine would significantly aid in delivering safe services, particularly for mothers who require surgical interventions.
This will bring the facility closer to meeting the requirements of a Health Centre IV, improving its ability to serve the community.
Dr. Edith Fomum and Janet Nabulo, in charge of the health center, also pledged their continued commitment to providing quality care to residents on behalf of both Spotlight Africa and the Government of Uganda.
They expressed their optimism that the new theatre machine would transform the facility’s ability to handle more complex medical cases, particularly related to maternity care.
The commitment from the UK philanthropists and the Spotlight Africa team marks a significant step toward improving healthcare services in the region and is a strong example of international collaboration for community development.
