Kitgum main market casual workers receive partial payment after protest threats

The Kitgum Municipality Council has yet to issue a clear timeline for resolving these grievances fully.

Kitgum: Casual workers at Kitgum Main Market, including Market Law Enforcement Officers, Cleaners, Plumbers, and Electricians, have finally received part of their salaries after months of delays.

The payments were made earlier this week during an engagement meeting between the Kitgum Municipality Council technical staff and the affected workers.

According to Angee Sarah, the Kitgum Municipality Communication Officer, the Council assured workers that salary delays were due to system-related challenges and urged them to be patient in such situations.

“Some inconveniences and delays are system-related, and we ask workers to bear with us as we address them,” she stated.

The workers had gone up to four months without pay since starting work in December 2024. Frustrated by the prolonged delays, they sought the intervention of the Kitgum District Resident District Commissioner (RDC).

In addition to unpaid wages, the workers raised serious concerns about unsafe working conditions, citing the lack of essential protective gear, including; gloves, gumboots and overalls.

They argued that working without proper safety equipment has put their health at serious risk.

While some payments have now been made, the affected workers continue to demand full payment of their outstanding wages, timely salary disbursement going forward and provision of necessary protective gear to ensure workplace safety

The Kitgum Municipality Council has yet to issue a clear timeline for resolving these grievances fully.
