Kiryandongo: Apyoroth Jane, the only Alur girl to complete P.7 at Kifuruta Primary School, dreams of becoming a lawyer and a member of parliament in the future.

She studied at Kifuruta Primary School from P.1 to P.7 and recalls how many of her Alur peers dropped out along the way, leaving her as the only Alur girl to complete P.7 last year.

Jane excelled in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), earning an aggregate of 24. She shared her inspiring story during an award ceremony for the best-performing girls in Mboira Sub-county.

The event was organized by Joanita Cartel, a community-based organization (CBO) dedicated to keeping girls in school in Kiryandongo District, where the Alur community is dominant.

Ms. Joanita Cartel, the founder of the CBO, has dedicated herself to making a positive impact on vulnerable girls in the Alur community. Despite facing personal struggles including dropping out of school, battling drug addiction, and experiencing a failed marriage Joanita turned her life around and is now committed to supporting girls’ education.

Through her research, she discovered that the Alur community faces significant challenges in education, particularly a lack of parental awareness about their role in their children’s education.

Determined to make a change, she has mobilized resources to support children in Mboira Sub-county. Joanita emphasizes that her organization is non-political and solely focused on keeping girls in school.

Alobo Patricia, the reigning Miss Tourism Alur and brand ambassador for keeping children in school, expressed gratitude to Hon. Jovia Katusiime and her company for their efforts in supporting girls’ education.

She specifically appreciated their provision of sanitary pads to schoolgirls, which promotes their well-being and helps them stay in school.

Patricia also called on stakeholders to intensify their efforts in supporting education, especially for the most vulnerable members of society.

Hon. Jovia Katusiime Mbabazi, an aspiring Women Member of Parliament for Kiryandongo District, highlighted the overlooked issue of menstrual hygiene. She noted that many girls miss school due to a lack of access to water and sanitary pads, which can have long-term consequences on their education.

The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kiryandongo District shared his experience working in Nebbi District, where early marriages were prevalent. He encouraged stakeholders to support initiatives like Joanita Cartel’s organization.

He also revealed that Mboira Sub-county had only one student who scored a first grade out of 371 first-grade students in the entire district. He urged parents to address challenges that hinder children’s education.

Kiryandongo District LCV Chairperson Aliguma Edith Adyeeri stressed the importance of providing food to school-going children, emphasizing that “a brain cannot function on an empty stomach.”

As efforts continue to improve girl-child education in Kiryandongo District, young girls like Apyoroth Jane serve as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
