Kiryandongo: A total of 61 candidates have been nominated for various positions in the upcoming Kiryandongo District Local Government elections, including the LC5 Chairperson and district council seats.

According to Mr. Musingunzi Rashid, the Kiryandongo District Returning Officer, the nominations were conducted successfully between September 3rd and September 5th, 2025.

The available positions include directly elected councillors from 10 sub-counties and 3 town councils, as well as representatives for special interest groups, including workers (male and female), youth (male and female), and the elderly.

The key race for the Kiryandongo LC5 Chairperson seat features two strong contenders, Hon. Aliguma Edith Adyeeri, the incumbent, was nominated as an independent candidate on Friday, September 5th at 10:15 a.m and Osagaa Nelson, the NRM flag bearer, was nominated later that same day at 5:18 p.m.

A total of 28 candidates are vying for directly elected councillor positions, 13 candidates on NRM ticket, four on National Unity Platform (NUP) and 11 on Independent ticket.

Only one candidate, Hon. Kilama Patrick, representing Bweyale Town Council, went unopposed at the close of nominations.

In the women councillor category, 11 were nominated on NRM ticket, one on NUP ticket and five Independents.

Among the key independent candidates is Hon. Katusabe Hellen, the incumbent for Bweyale Town Council, who cited irregularities during the NRM primaries as the reason for running independently.

Also contesting independently is Hon. Nyangoma Mildred, a former councillor from when Kiryandongo was still under Masindi District. She is contesting to represent women from Kiryandongo Sub-county and Kiryandongo Town Council, where she faces Kasangaki Jane, a strong incumbent who went unopposed in the NRM primaries.

For the special interest group seats including youth, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and elderly representatives, eight on NRM ticket and six independents.

Mr. Okot Bonny, the current District Vice Chairperson, was unopposed for the position representing elderly persons on the council.

Despite the overall success of the process, Mr. Musingunzi Rashid noted a few challenges. One significant issue was faced by NUP candidate Nsubuga Richard, who failed to complete his nomination for the LC5 Chairperson race before the deadline of 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5th.

A common challenge for several candidates was the delay in obtaining National Identification Numbers (NINs) from supporters, which caused some to be nominated beyond the official deadline.
