300 huts burnt after murder sparks clashes in Madi-Okollo

Security forces have been deployed to prevent further attacks, and authorities have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

Madi-Okollo: Over 300 huts were set ablaze in Madi-Okollo Town Council, Madi-Okollo District, following a violent clash between residents of Paraandra and Ogukuru cells.

The violence erupted after the reported murder of Arnold Agunduru, 25.

The incident, reported by a resident of Ogukuru cell, has been registered under REF SD 02/15/02/2025 at Madi-Okollo Central Police Station.

The West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, confirmed the incident, stating that the violence broke out during an introduction ceremony in Ogukuru cell on the evening of Saturday, February 15, 2025.

According to Asea, the deceased, Arnold Agunduru, a resident of Ogukuru cell, succumbed to injuries sustained in a fight. His relatives, believing the attackers were from Paraandra, retaliated by setting hundreds of huts on fire, destroying property, and looting belongings.

“Territorial police in Madi-Okollo CPS are currently investigating a case of assault involving 19 people from Paraandra cell and 12 from Ogukuru cell. The altercation resulted in the murder of Arnold Agunduru and the burning of over 300 huts in Ogukuru cell, Enyio Ward, Madi-Okollo Town Council. The case was reported by Abima Akim, a 28-year-old resident of Ogukuru cell,” Asea stated.

Asea further revealed that the chaos started at around 1:00 AM during a disco at the introduction ceremony. Eight people were assaulted by unknown individuals, prompting a group of youths from Paraandra cell to attack Ogukuru cell, accusing its residents of being responsible for the assault and subsequent death of Agunduru.

Several victims who sustained injuries during the violence were rushed to various health centers within Madi-Okollo District. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was taken to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
