16-year-old murdered over sexual intercourse, family revenge

He was found having sex with the girl before he was lynched.

Arua: Ayivu West Division Police are currently investigating a tragic incident involving the murder of a 16-year-old pupil named Waiswa Richard.

According to reports, Waiswa was allegedly lynched by assailants suspected to be members of his girlfriend’s family. The incident occurred on June 3, 2024, at his lover’s home in Nyai cell, Kati ward, Ayivu West Division, Arua City.

Waiswa sneaked out of his parents’ home on the night of June 3 to meet his girlfriend, who was also a pupil at Kova primary school. Unfortunately, he was trailed by the girl’s family, who suspected him of having an affair with their daughter.

Waiswa was found having sex with the girl before he was lynched. His body was then burned, and it was discovered near Oziava swamp, a few kilometers from his lover’s home.

The following day, his body was recovered with multiple cuts on the head.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, said that the incident was reported to the police, who opened a case of murder and initiated investigations.

Angucia asserted that a team of police officers, including the regional crime officer, visited the scene and documented the evidence. Waiswa’s body underwent an autopsy before being handed over to his family for burial.

The police officer said that the suspects responsible for the attack are currently on the run, and the police are actively searching for them.

Angucia urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report such matters to the authorities.

In the past, various programs and campaigns have encouraged adolescents to abstain from sex until the legal age of 18 and above, as early sexual activity can lead to teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and school dropouts.

Family revenge

Police are investigating cases of criminal trespass, arson, and malicious damage to properties suspected to have been done in a counterattack by relatives of the deceased Waiswa Richard, 16, who was allegedly murdered by the relatives of his girlfriend on June 3, 2024.

It is alleged that on June 5, the deceased’s family made a counterattack at about 6:00 a.m. at the family home of Buga Wilson in Edovu Cell, Kati Ward, Ayivu West Division, Arua City.

It’s also alleged that the complainant, Buga Wilson, left his home on June 4, 2024, at about 8:00 a.m., went to Arua town to sell clothes, and came back home at around 9:00 p.m. in the evening, only to find that all his family members were not around.

He then entered his house and slept off. At about 10:00 pm, his brothers went and told him that some boy was killed and dumped in Kova cell, and his relatives were suspecting him to have killed the deceased person, and that they had threatened to come and retaliate at his home that night.

They then advised him to leave his home.

It’s further alleged that by 6:00 am, the relatives of the deceased indeed went to the complaints home and demolished houses, destroyed crops, and finally burned down the whole homestead.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, told this publication on Friday, June 7, 2024, that the case was reported to police and that the above case was registered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Angucia said a team of police officers, including the Regional Scene of Crime Officer, visited the scene and properly documented it.

They recorded statements from relevant witnesses and have put efforts in place to arrest the suspects who are still at large, and inquiries continue under Ayivu West Division CRB 182/2024.
