This initiative underscores TotalEnergies' commitment to developing Ugandan talent and creating shared value for the country.

Kampala: A group of 100 young Ugandans has begun advanced training in Oil & Gas operations and maintenance in France, Malaysia, and Oman.

This training is part of their preparation for future roles in the Tilenga project during its production phase. The trainees are part of the first cohort of 200 students selected through the Tilenga Academy Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) conducted in 2022.

This transformative initiative began in April 2024, with the first phase of training taking place at the Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba (UPIK). The 2.5-year program involved both theoretical and practical training in Oil and Gas Production, Maintenance, and Health, Safety, and Environment.

The training was conducted by UPIK in collaboration with Dietsmann, the Maintenance, Operations, and Execution Contractor. Following successful completion of the initial phase, the students are now heading to France, Malaysia, and Oman for further training and international certification in specialized fields, including Production, Electrical, Mechanical, Production, and Instrumentation.

Philippe Groueix, General Manager of TotalEnergies EP Uganda, expressed his pride in the progress of the students, noting that the academy’s program is designed to provide comprehensive training, international certification, and essential skills needed for their roles once production begins.

He emphasized that the partnerships with leading institutions both in Uganda and abroad ensure the highest quality of training and exposure. This initiative underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to developing Ugandan talent and creating shared value for the country.

The international training will take place over 18 weeks in France, Malaysia, and Oman, followed by an additional 5 weeks in France. Upon completion, the students will earn Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization (OPITO) certification, which will enhance their employability worldwide.

Rania Birungi, a female trainee, shared her excitement about the opportunity: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to contribute to my country and build a rewarding career. I am deeply grateful to TotalEnergies EP Uganda for making this dream come true.”

Upon completion of their training, the students will be deployed in various specialized roles which include; 29% in Production, 23% in Mechanical Maintenance, 23% in Instrumentation Maintenance, 14% in Electrical Maintenance, 6% in Laboratory and 1% in Inspection.
