Youth cautioned against excessive alcohol consumption

Men seem to be heavier users of alcohol compared to women.

Kagadi: Police in the Albertine region have cautioned people, especially the youth, against excessive consumption of alcohol.

This comes after the body of one Tom Isingoma, a 35-year-old male adult resident of Kyomunembe cell in Kyomukama Ward in Kagadi district, was recovered along the roadside with three battles of waragi in his pocket.

The Albertine region police mouthpiece, Julius Allan Hakiza, told this publication that on August 9, 2024, at around 13:00 hours, Isingoma, now deceased, left the farm where he was working and went to take alcohol.

Hakiza says on his way back to the farm, he became weak and collapsed on the road, but on taking him to a clinic in the Kyomukama trading center, he was pronounced dead.

Hakiza cautioned people, especially youths, against excessive consumption of alcohol since it leads to untimely death.

The World Health Statistics 2023 report shows staggering levels of alcohol use in Uganda. Men seem to be heavier users of alcohol compared to women.

On average, Ugandans consume 12.21 liters of pure alcohol annually. Men average 19.93 liters, while women consume 4.88 liters. Approximately 50 percent of men aged 15 and above and 25 percent of women in the same age group partake of alcohol.

This is much higher than the African region average of 6.3 liters and the global average of 6.18 liters per person per year reflected in the WHO global status report on alcohol and health, 2018.

After Uganda, the Seychelles and Tanzania are found to be the countries with the second and third highest alcohol use in Africa, respectively.

Overall, the 2023 World Health Statistics report a reduction in exposure to many health risks, such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, violence, unsafe water and sanitation, and child stunting.

But risk exposure remains high, especially for factors such as alcohol consumption and hypertension, where declines began only in recent years.
