Woman discovers suspected unexploded hand grenade in Adjumani

Police say further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.

Adjumani: Authorities in Adjumani District have launched a formal investigation following the discovery of a suspected unexploded hand grenade in Tiolo Cell, Nyivura Ward, Pakele Town Council.

According to SP Collins Asea, North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, the device was discovered by Ms. Chandia Florence, a local resident, on the morning of September 4, 2025, while working in her maize and simsim garden.

“On 04/09/2025 at approximately 0900 hours, Ms. Chandia Florence, a resident of Tiolo Cell, reported to Pakele Police Station the discovery of a suspected hand grenade in her maize and simsim garden,” said SP Asea.

A response team from Pakele Police Station was immediately dispatched to the scene, where they confirmed the presence of what appeared to be an aged unexploded ordnance (UXO) lying in an open area of the garden.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the grenade still had its safety pin secured with a rubber rope, raising concerns that it may have been deliberately placed by an unidentified individual.

The case is being handled under Adjumani Central Police Station (CPS) with reference Pakele SDREF: 07/04/09/2025, dated 04/09/2025.

To ensure public safety, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from Police Headquarters in Kampala are en route to safely remove and neutralize the explosive device.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid the area around the site of the discovery, report any suspicious objects to the nearest police station and remain vigilant and cooperative with security forces

Police say further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
