UG Decides 2026

“We are engaging more opposition to join NRM,” says Jonard

He further disclosed that the Bunyoro region registered the highest turnout during President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s campaign rallies so far.

Hoima: The National Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for Western Region, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, has revealed that the party is actively engaging opposition politicians to join NRM ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking during a media engagement held on Friday at Kabalega Resort Hotel Hoima, Asiimwe said that several members from various opposition parties have already defected to NRM, while others have stepped down in favor of NRM flag bearers.

“We currently have about 17 unopposed NRM candidates, and we are continuing to engage more opposition members and independents to step down and support our flag bearers,” Asiimwe noted.

He further disclosed that the Bunyoro region registered the highest turnout during President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s campaign rallies so far.

“I want to thank all party members who mobilized the public and those who turned up in big numbers for our president’s rallies. My special thanks go to the NRM foot soldiers, PLU coordinators, the Minister of State for Children and Youth Affairs Dr. Balaam Barugahara, and many others,” he added.

Asiimwe urged residents of Bunyoro to continue showing strong support during the upcoming rallies in Kagadi, Kikuube, and Kakumiro districts.

He also pledged to remind President Museveni about his commitment to establish an industrial park in Bunyoro, emphasizing that such a project would create employment opportunities for many idle youths.

“I will remind the president to ensure that all pledges including the establishment of an industrial hub are fulfilled because it will employ many of our youth,” he said.

Asiimwe also highlighted the Kabale Industrial Park in Hoima, noting that it will produce bio-products from petroleum and offer significant employment opportunities once operational.

Meanwhile, he encouraged young people to engage in productive activities, especially agriculture, instead of seeking quick income from less sustainable ventures.

On the matter of high taxes affecting small business owners, Asiimwe explained that the burden feels heavier because too few people are engaged in production. He argued that wider participation in economic activities would help distribute the tax load more fairly.
