VP Alupo calls for united fight against poverty

The pledge was made during President Museveni’s visit in 2018, but the funds have yet to be disbursed.

Fort Portal: Vice President Maj. Jesca Alupo has called upon Catholic believers to join hands with leaders in the fight against poverty, emphasizing the need for collective action to uplift communities.

Speaking as the chief guest on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni at the rededication of Our lady of snows Virika Cathedral on Sunday, Maj. Alupo urged believers to embrace government income-generating programs to achieve financial independence.

“The NRM government calls upon all Ugandans to work hard and eliminate poverty from their households by engaging in sustainable projects,” she said.

Maj. Alupo also conveyed the President’s appreciation for the believers and well-wishers who contributed towards the renovation of Virika Cathedral, noting that the church plays a key role in both spiritual and economic transformation.

The mass was led by the Papal Nuncio to Uganda, His Excellency Luigi Bianco, who underscored the importance of the church in the Catholic faith.

“The rededication of Virika Cathedral comes at a significant moment the Jubilee Year, a sacred period in the Catholic Church marked by renewal, reconciliation, and special spiritual graces,” Bianco stated.

He further explained that Jubilee Years provide an opportunity for; pilgrimage, penance and receiving indulgences acts of divine mercy that grant remission of temporal punishment for sins.

“During this holy period, cathedrals serve as key places where believers can receive Jubilee indulgences through prayer, confession, and acts of faith,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bishop Dr. Robert Muhirwa of Fort Portal Diocese took the opportunity to remind the President through VP Maj. Alupo of the unfulfilled pledge of UGX 2.3 billion towards the construction of a library at St. Joseph’s Technical Institute Virika.
