UTB issues ultimatum to illegal accommodation providers
She urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to comply with these requirements.
Masindi: The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has set a deadline of November 18, 2024, for accommodation service providers to obtain the necessary licenses to operate legally.
Ritah Karungi Abwooli, the Masindi district tourism officer, stated that this ultimatum, announced on October 18, specifically targets various types of accommodations, including hotels, lodges, guest houses, motels, serviced apartments, cottages, and farmhouses.
UTB plans to categorize accommodation providers based on their facilities, focusing on accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs), location details, and employee qualifications.
Karungi noted that while some facilities in Masindi are already licensed, the process for new providers starts with online registration, which costs 200,000 shillings and is paid once.
This is followed by an inspection by UTB officials. Successful applicants will receive a license, which must be renewed annually for a fee of 100,000 shillings.
She urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to comply with these requirements to improve standards and attract more business from both local and international clients.
