Umukuka III appoints Kenya’s Speaker Wetangula as chief cultural advisor

Mzee Wetangula is also expected to serve as the gatekeeper of the kingdom’s heritage, ensuring that traditional beliefs and customs are preserved and respected across generations.

Bugisu: His Highness Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma has appointed Mzee Dominic Wetangula as the Chief Advisor to the Bamasaaba cultural institution.

Mzee Dominic Wetangula, a respected elder and father of the current Speaker of the Kenyan Parliament, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetangula, is expected to offer wise and strategic counsel to the Umukuka, especially in matters pertaining to cultural heritage and tradition.

According to Hon. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution, Mzee Wetangula’s role will be to guide and advise the Umukuka whenever the institution veers off the cultural path.

“His role as Chief Advisor is broad and discretionary. He will act as the voice of reason and wisdom, stepping in to guide the Umukuka and the administration whenever necessary,” Masiga stated. “We trust he will offer invaluable counsel to safeguard the values of the Bukuka administration.”

Mzee Wetangula is also expected to serve as the gatekeeper of the kingdom’s heritage, ensuring that traditional beliefs and customs are preserved and respected across generations.

Highlighting his spiritual and cultural influence, Masiga recalled that during the funeral of Umukuka I emeritus Wilson Wamimbi, Mzee Wetangula was the only person allowed by both the current Umukuka and the Government of Uganda to view the sealed body, a sign of the deep trust and honor he holds within the community.

A retired teacher by profession, Mzee Dominic Wetangula has served the Bamasaaba institution in various capacities since the reign of Umukuka I. Though his family settled in Kenya in the late 1890s, he traces his ancestry to Bubutu, Namisindwa in eastern Uganda.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the cultural institution and ensure the preservation of Bamasaaba values across borders.
