Uganda, South Sudan authorities agree to strengthen cross-border cooperation

Lamwo: The local authorities from Uganda and South Sudan have unanimously agreed on several measures to strengthen cross-border cooperation to address security and development challenges.

According to the Lamwo District RDC, Mr. Oceng Geoffrey Osborne, the Lamwo and Magwi County authorities held a border strategic engagement meeting recently at Magwi headquarters.

The meeting was hosted by Commissioner Pole-Pole Benjamin Olum and the Lamwo District RDC.

Mr. Oceng added that the engagement meeting aimed to discuss and coordinate border management and security issues between the neighboring districts and counties across the Uganda-South Sudan border.

He noted that they identified challenges such as cattle rustling and cross-border livestock theft, illegal border crossings and human trafficking, cross-border crime and smuggling, and the lack of coordinated responses between security agencies on both sides of the border.

Commissioner Oceng Geoffrey Osborne further stated that the authorities agreed to strengthen information sharing and joint operations, establish regular coordination meetings and communication channels between security agencies on both sides of the border, share intelligence, and coordinate joint operations to tackle cross-border crimes.

Additionally, there will be the development of cross-border infrastructure and connectivity, including roads, bridges, and border posts.
