Two family members die in mining quarry in Kabale

Kabale: Police in Kabale District are currently investigating the sudden deaths of two family members who lost their lives when soil covered them in a mining quarry.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Mwikirize Rosette, 28, and her 10-year-old daughter, Abeneitwe Berinah, both residents of Hamuganda village, Bukora parish, Kitumba sub-county, Kabale district.

According to Maate, the incident occurred on 11/12/2023, at around 01:30 pm, in Hamuganda village. The mother and daughter were mining sand in a quarry when the soil cracked and fell on them, resulting in their immediate demise.

Maate explained that the Kabale Homicide team and the police surgeon from Kigezi region, led by D/CID/O D/SP Mukama Hakim, visited the scene, conducted an examination, and documented the incident.

The regional police mouthpiece told journalists that witness statements were recorded and a postmortem was carried out at the site where the bodies were discovered. A report of sudden death was subsequently registered at Kitumba police station with reference SD ref: 06/11/12/2023.
