Kiryandongo: Two people have died, and seven others are receiving treatment at Panyadoli Health Center IV in Bweyale Town Council, Kiryandongo District, following a suspected cholera outbreak.
According to Emmanuel Murungi, the district communications officer, the patients who are from the refugee settlement and Bweyale Town Council exhibited symptoms consistent with cholera.
This prompted the district health team to send their samples to the Central Public Health Laboratory in Kampala on Thursday for further testing.
“We are still waiting for the test results,” Murungi stated.
While awaiting confirmation, the district task force has implemented precautionary measures to curb the potential spread of the disease. These measures include banning the sale of foodstuffs in schools linked to the reported cases and enforcing strict handwashing practices. The public has also been urged to maintain proper hygiene in their homes.
Murungi further noted that the admitted patients are responding well to treatment.
Emmanuel Businge, the acting district health officer, confirmed the deaths and stated that the deceased were buried on Friday.
Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement is home to thousands of refugees from neighboring countries, including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.
Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease that can be fatal within hours if left untreated. It spreads through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and restlessness.
