Two arrested over theft of construction materials for Hoima Stadium

He said they recovered iron sheets, iron bars, and fuel all meant for the stadium.

Hoima: Security in Hoima has arrested two people on allegations that they were in possession of construction items meant to be used at the Hoima Stadium construction site.

This was disclosed on Thursday, August 22, 2024, during the Hoima City council meeting held at the Hoima Buffalo Hotel.

Badru Mugabi, Resident City Commissioner for Hoima, revealed while giving a security update to the council  that they got intelligence that there are people who are stealing iron bars, iron sheets, and fuel meant to be used at the Hoima Stadium construction site.

Mugabi disclosed that the people they arrested led them to the Nyakambugu cell, where they recovered iron sheets, iron bars, and fuel all meant for the stadium. They were arrested on Wednesday, August 22, 2024 and stolen items are at Hoima CPS.

During the same council meeting, Brain Kaboyo, the Mayor of Hoima City, revealed that the Hoima Stadium construction project is yet to be handed over to the contractor, but by September 1, 2024, it will be handed over officially.

Kaboyo says once the handover is done, the recruitment of the local people will commence, and 1000–1500 people will be able to get jobs.

Hon. Patrick Mugabi, the male councilor worker, said that there is a need to put up lights along Kyarwiru Road where there are stadium construction works since they work for 24 hours and at night it is hard to see the green or red flags due to darkness.

Hon. Mugabi adds that there is also a lot of dust and soil on the road, especially along Kakindo, caused by the trucks from the construction site.

Hon. Joshua Byenkya, male councilor for Hoima West Division, stressed that there is a need for the city to get a focal person who can always attend to the issues from the community regarding the stadium being constructed.

Hon. Byenkya notes that the fencing off of the site where the stadium is being constructed has not left the space where pedestrians can walk, and it will lead to accidents since the road has become narrow around that area.

In his response, Kaboyo said that as a city, they don’t have the authority to employ a focal person to talk to people about the stadium since they are not clients of the project, so they can’t do much.

Kaboyo stated that, as per the fencing of the area where the stadium construction works are, they agreed with the contractor in a meeting to extend the fence by four meters from the road.
