Two arrested as police recover stolen vehicle number plates in Rukungiri
The stolen number plates were recovered with the help of the arrested suspects.
Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri Municipality conducted an intelligence-led operation in response to an increase in vehicle number plate thefts.
Rusoke Kituuma, the police spokesperson, told journalists on Monday July 29, 2024 that the operation was carried out on July 25, 2024.
Kituuma disclosed that the operation led to the arrest of suspects identified as Mujuni Brian and Arinaitwe Anthony.
In addition, the operation also involved the recovery of the stolen vehicle number plates, which include UAS 842V, stolen in June 2024, and UBQ 0131T, stolen in June 2024.
Others are UBA 458C, stolen on July 20, 2024; UBD 908K, stolen on July 20, 2024; and UBB 279S, stolen on July 21, 2024.
According to Kituuma, the stolen number plates were recovered with the help of the arrested suspects. He further added that the operation is ongoing.
He emphasizes that to combat this trend, car owners are advised to use vehicle tracking devices and fleet monitoring systems. The police officer also warns mechanics and dealers who facilitate these crimes.
