Buliisa: TotalEnergies Uganda has awarded 20 O’Level scholarships to outstanding pupils from Buliisa District and Nwoya District, in a bid to promote girls’ education and support learners from vulnerable families.

Under the initiative, 10 girls from Buliisa district will study for four years at St. Andrea Kaahwa’s College in Hoima. The scholarships target pupils who excelled in their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), particularly those facing financial hardship.

Speaking during the awarding ceremony at the Buliisa district headquarters, Sophia Kabonesa,  Buliisa district inspector of schools said the scholarship program has significantly improved girls’ academic performance in the district since its introduction.

Godfrey Lukwago, Stakeholder Engagement Officer at TotalEnergies Uganda, said the company has provided 20 scholarships in total 10 in Buliisa and 10 in Nwoya.

He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting girls’ education, keeping them in school, and strengthening their families.

Lukwago added that the company also plans to promote science subjects and encourage beneficiaries to pursue sciences at A’Level.

Among the beneficiaries is Melisa Atugonza, who completed Primary Seven at Oil Nursery and Primary School with an aggregate of 9. She said she studied with the support of a guardian and comes from a family facing financial challenges, as her father suffers from diabetes and cannot afford her school fees.

Atugonza expressed gratitude for the scholarship, saying her dream is to become a doctor.

Another beneficiary, Joan Trinity, completed Primary Seven at Ngwendo Primary School. After scoring 19 aggregates in 2024, she repeated the class and improved to 12 aggregates.

With no money to continue her studies, she chose to repeat Primary Seven rather than remain idle at home. She said she is grateful for the opportunity and is determined to work hard to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor.
