Thugs steal solar panels from Arua water pump project

Arua: Police in Arua District are investigating the theft of seven solar panels from a Red Cross-funded water pumping project in Ayaayia Parish, Ajia Subcounty.
The incident, which occurred on November 18, 2024, has disrupted the project aimed at improving water access for agricultural purposes in the community.
Collins Asea, the West Nile Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of two suspects: Manega Hassan, 33, a driver from Tanyanyika Cell, Arua City, and Adoroti Ronald, 30, a casual worker from Gallia Village, Yachi Parish, Madi Okollo District.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects, along with others still at large, dismantled the solar panels and attempted to sell them. During a police operation in Erubu Town, six of the stolen panels were intercepted, and the suspects’ vehicle, a green Toyota Hiace (registration UBE 661Y), was seized.
Asea commended the combined efforts of Field Force Unit officers and highway patrols in apprehending the suspects after a pursuit. Statements have been recorded, and investigations are ongoing to recover the seventh missing solar panel.
The suspects are believed to be repeat offenders targeting community infrastructure for personal gain. The police assured the public of their commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding essential community resources.
