Bududa: The police in Bududa have arrested a man accused of killing his girlfriend, who had decided to leave him after discovering they were related.
The couple, who had been in a relationship, had a child together. Following the revelation of their familial connection, the suspect killed the 19-year-old woman and buried her in his father’s banana plantation. The body was later exhumed by the police.
The incident took place on December 19, 2024, at an unknown time in Buimbiyi North village, Bukhaukha Parish, Buzeiko Sub-County, Bududa District. The deceased was identified as Tsemoyi Betty, a 19-year-old Gishu peasant from Bumushiso North village, Bushika Sub-County, Bududa District.
According to the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika, Tsemoyi Betty (the deceased) had been in a relationship with Wakubona Stephen (the suspect) for some time. They even had a child together.
However, their families had disapproved of the relationship due to the fact that they were cousins. On the morning of December 19, 2024, Betty went to the suspect’s home around 9:00 AM to pick up her clothes, informing her parents beforehand. She was not seen again until it was reported that she had been killed and buried in the suspect’s father’s banana plantation.
The matter was reported to the police, and an investigation was launched. Relevant statements were recorded, and the body was later transported to Bududa Hospital mortuary, pending an autopsy.
The suspect was arrested in Mbale and is currently detained at Maluku Police Station. The investigation revealed that the deceased and the suspect were cousins who had engaged in incest, resulting in the birth of one child. Both of their parents had opposed the relationship.
The deceased was found with a deep cut on her neck, indicating that the suspect used a panga to kill her before burying her body in the banana plantation.
After committing the crime, the suspect fled to Mbale, but police tracked him down and arrested him.
In response to the crime, locals and the deceased’s relatives attacked the suspect’s home and neighboring houses, demolishing them and cutting down banana plantations in an act of vengeance.
According to the deceased’s relatives, Betty had been cautioned not to return to the suspect’s home, but she had sought permission to retrieve her clothes, which appears to have angered the suspect.
