TERRIBLE! Arua DHO hacked to death
The confrontation quickly spiraled into a deadly attack by a group of over 50 armed individuals wielding machetes, axes, bows, and arrows.
Arua: Police are investigating the brutal killing of Dr. Paul Drilaba, the District Health Officer (DHO) of Arua, in a tragic incident that occurred on the afternoon of November 23, 2024, in Oyeku Village, Ombokoro Parish, Ajia Subcounty.
Dr. Drilaba, 55, was attacked and killed while overseeing the demarcation of land he had purchased in September 2024. He was accompanied by his lawyer, surveyors, and workers when the situation escalated into violence.
According to preliminary reports, an altercation arose when a local individual questioned their presence on the land.
The confrontation quickly spiraled into a deadly attack by a group of over 50 armed individuals wielding machetes, axes, bows, and arrows.
Dr. Drilaba and a surveyor sustained fatal injuries, while others managed to escape. Tragically, the DHO succumbed to his injuries before police arrived at the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the land was claimed by members of the Oyeku clan, who assert ancestral ties to the property. The West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Collins Asea, confirmed that the attack appeared to be motivated solely by grievances over the land, as the victim’s personal belongings, including UGX 1,767,000, were untouched.
“This tragic incident highlights the need for lawful and nonviolent resolution of land disputes,” said Asea. He assured the public that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the attackers, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted to ensure justice for the deceased.
The case is being investigated under CRB 249/2024. Asea emphasized the police’s commitment to resolving the matter and bringing those responsible to justice.
Authorities are urged to act swiftly to restore peace and prevent further escalation of land-related violence in the region.
