Terego RDC urges West Nile to embrace money economy

He encouraged farmers to move away from traditional farming practices and embrace commercial agriculture

Terego: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Terego, Godwin Angalia Kasigwa, has advised the people of West Nile to prepare and transition into the money economy.

During a radio talk show on UBC West Nile FM on Saturday, Angalia highlighted the region’s fertile soils, which remain underutilized.

He noted that while West Nile’s land is rich, the region primarily grows crops like sesame (sim sim) on a small scale, unlike other areas such as Kasese, which despite facing harsh conditions like drought and flooding, is the second-largest coffee producer in Uganda.

Angalia urged West Nile farmers to diversify into crops such as bananas, cocoa, cassava, coffee, and pineapples crops well-suited to the region’s fertile soils.

He emphasized that these crops are in high demand and have lucrative markets, pointing out that the cassava sold locally in West Nile is often sourced from as far as Paliisa district, though West Nile could produce them domestically.

The RDC encouraged farmers to move away from traditional farming practices and embrace commercial agriculture as a means to boost household incomes and contribute to food security.

He also pointed to the improvements in infrastructure, particularly the road network, under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

Angalia noted that these road improvements provide farmers with better access to markets, enabling them to transport their goods efficiently and increase their earnings.

“These infrastructure developments have enhanced connectivity within the region and boosted cross-border trade,” Angalia remarked.

He also urged community members to take advantage of government programs like Emyooga, the Parish Development Model (PDM), Youth Livelihood Programs, and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), all designed to improve household incomes.

Angalia’s advice comes at a time when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is touring various regions of Uganda to monitor the progress of the Parish Development Model, a government initiative aimed at elevating citizens from poverty into the money economy.
