Suspects accused of murdering Bakanya remanded
The duo have been remanded to Masindi government prison.
Masindi: The Masindi Grade One Magistrate Court on Thursday remanded two suspects believed to have gruesomely murdered a 16-year-old Costa Bakanya in Kibangya village, Kimengo Sub County, Masindi district.
The duo, Dickson Nabimanya, aged 30 together with Rogers Amanya 20, all residents of Kibangya village in Kimengo Sub County, Masindi district allegedly raped, murdered, and dumped the body of Bakanya in River Kafu on November 11, 2024.
The duo have been remanded to Masindi government prison.
Grade One Magistrate Fortunate Nyipir remanded the duo until December 12, 2024, when they will appear in court again.
She did not allow them to take a plea, as her court lacks jurisdiction over murder cases. However, she informed the suspects. that they have the right to apply for bail once their case is transferred to the High Court, which has the authority to try them.
Speaking to ugreports.co.ug after a court session, Stephen Kamuhanda, the uncle of the late Bakanya, expressed his deep gratitude to the police and local leaders for their tireless efforts in apprehending the suspected killers.
Kamuhanda commended the authorities for their diligence in investigating the case, which ultimately led to the suspects being brought to trial.
He urged his relatives to remain patient. during the ongoing court process, but he conveyed a sense of optimism about the developments.
Kamuhanda believes that in time, justice will be served, and if suspects are found guilty, they will receive a sentence commensurate with the severity of the crime they committed.
Bakanya’s murder
Costa Bakanya, who had just completed her Primary Leaving Exams (PLE) at Kayeera Primary School is believed to have been murdered by Amanya Rogers and Nabimanya Dickson on November 11, 2024, while she was out grazing cattle.
Her body was tragically discovered floating. in Lake Kyoga at Masindi Port, Kiryandongo District.
The two suspects, Amanya and Nabimanya, were employed at Annette Ainembabazi’s maize plantation in Kibangya Village at the time of the incident.
