Buliisa: A suspected chicken thief was killed and his body set ablaze in Kihungya Trading Centre, Waaki Parish, Kihungya Sub-County, Buliisa District.
The gruesome incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday near Kihungya Sub-County headquarters, along the Kihungya-Kimbeni-Nyeramya road.
The LC1 Chairperson of Kihungya Trading Centre, Mr. Kuba Uvola, confirmed the incident, stating that he was alerted by residents who found the burnt body by the roadside.
“I received information from residents that someone had been burned on the roadside, suspected of being a thief. When I arrived at the scene, I found a young man, likely in his 30s, along with three chickens, all burnt to ashes,” Kuba said.
He further revealed that cases of theft particularly involving chickens have been on the rise in the area.
“We have been registering increased cases of theft, especially of chickens. Unfortunately, the deceased is not a known resident of this area,” he added.
Kihungya Sub-County LC3 Chairperson, Kenneth Tumusiime, also confirmed the incident, stating that he came across the burning body while heading to his office at around 7 AM on Thursday.
“As I was going to work, I saw the body burning near the sub-county headquarters. The man had chickens with him, which we suspect were stolen,” he said.
Tumusiime disclosed that in the last three weeks, the area has witnessed an alarming increase in theft and break-ins, with criminals terrorizing locals at night.
“We have lost about 50 chickens in the past three weeks. Cases of theft are rampant in my sub-county. I urge the youth to embrace hard work instead of engaging in crime,” he advised.
Police officials from Buliisa District arrived at the scene and transported the body to Buliisa General Hospital for a post-mortem and identification.
Efforts to reach Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, for a comment were unsuccessful at press time.
