Stanbic Bank breaks silence on foiled robbery at Acacia Mall

The police have confirmed that six suspects were neutralized and that further investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Kampala:  Stanbic Bank Uganda has issued a statement in response to reports about a foiled robbery attempt near its Acacia Mall branch.

The bank clarified that the incident, which occurred on Monday, January 13, 2025, did not take place inside the bank’s branch and did not affect its operations or the safety of its clients or staff.

In a statement released on January 13, the bank expressed concern over the incident, noting that the robbery attempt was thwarted by security agencies. “The Bank would like to clarify that the said incident did not happen inside our Acacia branch, and there was no impact on the operations and safety of staff and clients,” the bank confirmed.

The attempted robbery, which targeted Shs500 million, was foiled by the Ugandan police who neutralized six suspects involved in the heist. According to a police statement, the suspects had been on the police watchlist for their involvement in previous robberies in the region.

Uganda Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke revealed that the operation was intelligence-led, with police officers deployed to key locations to intercept suspects traveling on motorcycles. The suspects had been tracking their target from Acacia Mall with the intent to seize a cash bag. However, they were intercepted at various locations, including Total Acacia and Tagore Road.

During the operation, police recovered two motorcycles, two pangas (machetes), and pepper spray. The police have confirmed that six suspects were neutralized and that further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
