Ssebaruli’s proverbs leave Bamasaaba in stitches at Umukuka III’s coronation anniversary
The occasion marked not just a ceremonial milestone but a reaffirmation of cultural unity and wisdom passed through generations.

Mbale: Hon. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution, has shared how His Highness the Ssebaruli, Chairman of all Cultural Leaders in Uganda, captivated and amused the Bamasaaba people with his rich use of African proverbs during the second coronation anniversary of Umukuka III, His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma.
Speaking at the coronation dinner held at Mt. Elgon Hotel in Mbale on Saturday, October 4th, His Highness the Ssebaruli used humor and traditional wisdom to emphasize the importance of peace and unity within the Bamasaaba community and Uganda at large.
Opening his speech with a striking metaphor, the Ssebaruli said:
“It is only a stupid cat that eats a pregnant rat.”
He explained that a wise cat would rather wait for the rat to give birth, so it can have many to eat instead of just one.
The message, laced in humor and depth, was aimed at encouraging patience, unity, and long-term vision among leaders and communities.
Another proverb that resonated strongly with the audience was:
“It is only a foolish man who dares a crocodile while standing with both legs in the water.”
This, he explained, warns against the danger of provoking conflict while in a vulnerable position.
These quotes, according to Hon. Masiga, were warmly received by the audience, with many Bamasaaba declaring they would remember them for a lifetime.
“The Ssebaruli’s message truly sank in,” said Masiga. “The essence of these proverbs, especially the analogy of the pregnant rat, was a call for the Bamasaaba to rally behind their cultural leader instead of undermining him.”
The dinner brought together a host of dignitaries and cultural leaders, including His Highness the Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma, and Teso Cultural Leader Papa Emorimor Augustine Osuban (Sunday). The occasion marked not just a ceremonial milestone but a reaffirmation of cultural unity and wisdom passed through generations.
