Six herbalists arrested for possessing human bones

The police called on anyone victimized by such practices to report to the authorities

Jinja: In a sweeping law enforcement operation on 21st November, six traditional herbalists in the Jinja district were arrested after sacks of human bones and skeletons were discovered in their shrines.

The operation, conducted in Buwenge Town Council, uncovered sacks filled with human bones and skeletons in shrines, sparking shock and outrage in the local community.

The operation was spearheaded by the Kiira Regional Police Command under SSP Charles Nsaba, with support from the Regional CID, led by SSP Monday Johnson Agaba, and local police under SP Morris Oyee, the DPC of CPS Buwenge.

The arrested suspects are: Afani Zubairi (62), a resident of Mawaito in Buwenge Rural Sub County; Ronald Mukasa (51), from Market Zone, Buwenge Town Council; Ibrahim Iswezi (42), also from Market Zone, Buwenge Town Council; Nathan Nantakika (32), from Muguluka East, Buwenge Town Council; Herman Wabitotya (18), from Kyerinda Zone, Buwenge Town Council; and Sharif Mugere (18), from Butagaya Sub County, Jinja District.

The arrests follow a public outcry over disturbing reports that these herbalists allegedly demanded human bones from the community, reportedly for economic or ritualistic purposes.

Preliminary investigations suggest the remains were from individuals who died over 50 years ago.

The police are interrogating the suspects and have submitted forensic samples of the bones for DNA analysis to trace their origins.

The suspects are being charged with “disturbing the peace of the dead.” Speaking on the issue, Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi, emphasized the need for traditional herbalists to desist from illegal practices.

He warned against extortion and providing false promises to desperate individuals and using human remains for purported economic gain.

SP Mubi urged the community to engage in lawful, productive activities and discouraged reliance on illegal remedies for personal challenges like broken marriages or relationships.

The police called on anyone victimized by such practices to report to the authorities and victims are encouraged to file official complaints to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
