Security intercepts vehicle carrying stolen cows in Buliisa

Recently, URA officials in the neighboring Hoima district busted and intercepted notorious smugglers who had been evading taxes.

Buliisa: The security officials attached to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in Buliisa district intercepted three suspected cattle thieves with a vehicle loaded with suspected stolen cows on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Yoram Musiime, the in-charge URA Biiso-Butiaba station in Buliisa district, told ugreports.co.ug that the suspected thieves were intercepted at around 3 a.m. when they were carrying out their routine operation along the Biiso-Butiaba-Buliisa road.

Musiime stressed that the suspected thieves had loaded the cows and other smuggled goods into a Noar vehicle registration number UAQ910G.

He added that though they tried to stop them, the driver refused to stop, and they were intercepted in the Kihungya trading center in Buliisa district while heading to Hoima district.

After their interception, the three suspects who were on board with the driver took off and went into hiding, leaving the vehicle moving, and thus three suspected stolen cows were recovered and handed to the Biiso police station in Biiso town council Buliisa District.

John Mwaule Chrysostom, the Buliisa District Police Commander, confirmed the incident through a phone call and said police have mounted investigations into the matter.

Following intelligence reports, the team deployed at the Runga landing site along Lake Albert in Hoima district, where they received tips about a smuggler known as Musa.

Similarly, in a recent operation, the URA’s team conducted a week-long operation in the suburbs of Namayiba bus park, Gayaza, Kayunga, and Nakasongola lake shores, targeting evaders and smugglers.

The operation resulted in the interception of a significant quantity of goods worth millions, which had been smuggled into the country to avoid paying taxes.

The seized goods included 302.4 kilograms of powdered milk, 500 kilograms of spaghetti, 2,120 kilograms of basmati rice, 14,370.36 square meters of textile material, 250 kilograms of prohibited cosmetics, and three motor vehicles impounded.

They uncovered 64,497,278 million shillings in potential tax revenue. URA remains committed to enforcing tax compliance and penalizing illicit trading.
