SAD! Pupil dies in Kamuli dormitory fire

Bernard, who was inside the dormitory at the time, was unable to escape.

Kamuli: A devastating fire at Balawoli Primary School in Kamuli District has claimed the life of a 12-year-old pupil and destroyed property, leaving the school community in mourning.

The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, May 25, 2025, at around 11:00 p.m., when a fire broke out in the boys’ dormitory at the government-aided school located in Balawoli Town Council.

The deceased has been identified as Famba Bernard, a Primary Five pupil and the son of the school’s matron.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread rapidly, consuming mattresses, clothing, and scholastic materials. Bernard, who was inside the dormitory at the time, was unable to escape.

His siblings, who were also staying in the dormitory, tried to alert their mother who was in the girls’ dormitory about 70 meters away but by the time help arrived, the flames had become too intense for any rescue.

ASP Michael Kasadha, spokesperson for the Busoga North Police, stated that initial findings point to a possible electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the fire.

However, he emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Bernard’s body was recovered from the charred remains of the dormitory and transported to Kamuli General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Authorities have pledged to strengthen safety protocols in schools and ensure preventive measures are put in place to avert similar incidents in the future.
