Residents challenged to take action against malaria

By working together, Tumwebaze believes that the community can significantly reduce the spread of malaria and create a healthier future for all.

Kagadi: In a bid to combat the scourge of malaria, Kagadi District Health Educator Tumwebaze Justine has appealed to residents to prioritize preventive measures.

Speaking in an interview with this publication, Tumwebaze emphasized the importance of sleeping under mosquito nets and maintaining good sanitation practices.

Tumwebaze says malaria is a major public health concern in Kagadi district and indeed the country.

She adds that research done between 2017 and 2028 shows that a staggering 90% of patients who visit government health facilities were diagnosed with malaria in Uganda.

Tumwebaze explained that the disease is often spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water, emphasizing the need for proper waste management and drainage.

The health educator also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, encouraging residents to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms like fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms.

By working together, Tumwebaze believes that the community can significantly reduce the spread of malaria and create a healthier future for all.

Prevention of malaria

Malaria prevention involves a combination of strategies to reduce the risk of infection. Here are some key steps:

Antimalarial Medications: If you’re traveling to areas where malaria is common, consult with a healthcare provider about taking antimalarial medications (chemoprophylaxis). These medications help prevent infections. Remember to take them as prescribed, both before and after your trip.

Avoid mosquito bites:

o    Use insect repellent on the exposed skin.

o    Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure.

o    Sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets in areas where malaria is present.

  1. Proper itinerary planning:

o    Obtain a detailed itinerary for your trip, including all possible destinations.

o    Check if malaria is present and spreading in those locations.

o    The CDC’s Yellow Book provides country-specific information on malaria prevention, including recommended antimalarial drugs.

  1. Personal Protective Measures:

o    Use mosquito nets when sleeping in malaria-endemic areas.

o    Wear clothing that covers exposed skin.

o    Apply mosquito-repelling chemicals.
