Relief as Wanseko – Panyimur ferry resumes operations
Travellers expressed concern over the increased costs, noting that the new rates were unaffordable for many in the community.
Buliisa: The MV Albert Nile 1 ferry has resumed operations along the Wanseko-Panyimur route, bringing relief to hundreds of passengers who had been stranded for a week due to mechanical repairs.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) had temporarily suspended the ferry’s operations last Monday to address technical issues, which led to significant disruptions and increased travel costs for residents dependent on this route.
UNRA’s Public Relations Officer, Allan Sempebwa, confirmed the ferry’s return, noting that UNRA’s technical teams had assessed and repaired the ferry over the week-long suspension.
“Technical teams from UNRA assessed the condition of the ferry and worked on it, and we would like to inform the public that we have resumed our operations,” he stated.
The ferry resumed its service at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, operating from the Wanseko landing site in Buliisa District.
This reopening has been met with enthusiasm from travelers, who were previously burdened by high boat fares in the absence of the free ferry service.
The fare hike during the suspension saw boat operators doubling their rates, with passengers paying 10,000 UGX per route instead of the usual 5,000 UGX, making a round trip cost 20,000 UGX—a steep amount for many locals.
Passenger James Uchai expressed concern over the increased costs, noting that the new rates were unaffordable for many in the community.
Herbert Lukumu, the LC1 Chairperson of Wanseko Cell, commended UNRA for the prompt repairs, highlighting that the ferry’s return will alleviate the financial strain caused by the higher transport costs.
However, boat operators acknowledged that they saw a surge in demand during the suspension, with the lack of ferry service temporarily boosting their business.
The MV Albert Nile 1 ferry’s return will restore affordable and accessible transport for residents along Lake Albert, providing much-needed economic relief to the community.
